WHITE: Sitting in front of me here in Melbourne is the
Prime Minister, Bob Hawke. Good afternoon to you Sir. It
was very kind of you to make that generous announcement that

PM: Well it was a pleasure Brian. What you say about the
contemporary music industry is absolutely right. I mean
people tend to think of it just as entertainment and it's
certainly that but it is a big industry in employment

JOURNALIST: Mr Hawke, did you lose your cool last night in
Parliament? PM: I wasn't in Parliament last night.
JOURNALIST: The ' recycled dunderhead' remark has been
reported, do you have any thinking on that?
PM: No, no, I don't have any regrets about a little bit of
tough language. The fact is that we have a leader who is
recylced but that's no reflection on Andrew, it's rather a
reflection on the Liberal Party. He's been there and it's a

In recent weeks the tragic situation in Lebanon has
deteriorated again, with renewed fighting and accompanying
injuries and deaths of Lebanese people, including many
civilians. Australia's Lebanese community has naturally been gravely
concerned about thi6 situation and I have in recent days met
with representatives of the community, both Christian and
Muslim. Community and religious leaders have given me at
first hand their views on the tragedy, and I have taken the

JOURNALIST: Prime Minister would you encourage moves by the
Labor Party to not run a candidate against Mr Macphee if he
ran as an independent?
PM: It's purely hypothetical. Mr Macphee is yet to make a
statement about what he's going to do. I don't see any
benefit for me or Mr Macphee in speculating about what will
happen. The only certain thing is of course that the
Liberal Party has demonstrated conclusively its lurch to the

PM: I'm very pleased to be over here in Hobart this morning
with Michael Field and I want at the outset to pay tribute to
