I welcome you all most warmly to this significant,
unprecedented and timely conference. The concept which this
conference embodies originated in the discussions I had with
the British Prime Minister during her visit to Australia
last August for our Bicentenary. Mrs Thatcher and I agreed

I am very grateful to the ANZAC Group for this opportunity
to address under its auspices this gathering of members of
the Lords and Commons.
No Australian -certainly no Australian Prime Minister
could stand in this place and fail to be powerfully reminded

HAWKE: Mrs Thatcher has invited me to make the initial
comments. The first thing I say is to express to Mrs
Thatcher the appreciation of the Australian Government for
the catalytic role which she's taken to put a new vigour
into the Australian/ United Kingdom relationship. I think it
commenced with a visit to Australia last year and upon her
return she has ensured that the preparations for our visit

PM:' Gentlemen, what I'd like to do at the outset is to give
you, and refer to, the issues briefly and I'm open to any
questions that you would like to address to me on those
matters. The first subject of course was a mutual welcoming by the
British Prime Minister and myself, my Ministers and hers on
the fact of the meeting and the stature of the meeting.

That great citizen of London, Dr Johnson, declared more than
two hundred years ago that the man who was tired of London
was tired of life itself.

deep concern and upset about China. For a man who's been in
politics a long time, why were you so personally concerned
about it?

increasing dramatically. Should there be a further interest
rate rise?
PM: I'm not saying there should be a further interest rate
0 rise. I repeat what I've said consistently, that all
settings of policy will be kept as tight as is necessary to
deal with the situation. Just making a general comment on

what happened this morning in the agreement of the
environment? PM: When we talked about the environment there were three
elements for that. I guess the most important was our
agreement in regard to the Antarctic. Let me give you the
words of the agreement. They are Australia and France
call upon the consultative parties to the Antarctic Treaty

official visit to France. I count it a special privilege to
be here as Prime minister of Australia at this time on the
eve, as it were, of the celebration of the epoch making
