Jim Waley: In spite of continuing gloom at the state of the
economy, the leading voices of Labor's -federal government were
unusually silent this week, hushed perhaps in the hope that given
the stage to himself, Opposition Leader Andrew Peacock would
fluff his lines during his five day, five state mock election*

PRIME MINISTER
FOR MEDIA 2 AUGUST 1989
I have sent the following message to Allan Border:
Congratulations on your historic Ashes victory. The
1989 side has performed magnificently as individuals, as
a team and as representatives of Australia.
Your own leadership has been superb. I know of no
Australian sportsman who has fought more courageously
for his country or more richly deserved this ultimate
achievement for an Australian Test captain.

1989 E 0 E PROOF ONLY
PM: Well the time has come when a very specific question
has to be put to Mr Peacock, the Leader of the Opposition.
The question is simple, quite uncomplicated. Did he or did
he not say to a luncheon meeting of the executives of John
Fairfax that the Opposition would not be releasing all the
details of its proposed spending cuts before the election?
Most specifically, did he tell the luncheon that there would

JOURNALIST: Prime Minister, what is the importance of
today's multicultural agenda?
P14: Well the importance for all Australians is that it will
do two things. It's about social justice. That is ensuring
that all Australians, irrespective of their background, they
shall have equal access to the resources of government and
equal opportunity to develop themselves within Australia.
But also it's important for all Australians whether they

Sir James Gobbo,
Members of the Advisory Council
on Multicultural Affairs,
Sir William Keys,
Fellow Australians,
Rarely could it be more appropriate that we greet each
other, as we do today, with those words, ' Fellow
Australians'. For looking around this room I see the faces of Australia.
They are the faces of almost every continent, race,

MURPHY: Can I begin by asking you what does the agenda
which you've outlined today mean for ethnic communities in
Broadmeadows, Cabramatta, Whyalla, Darwin, wherever they
happen to live in this country?
PM: It means these things. Firstly, a recognition now, I
think, not just from the Government, but forcefully in front
of the whole Australian people about the fact that every
person in this country, irrespective of race, colour, creed,

THOMPSON: What's been the key factor in the greening of Bob
Hawke? PM: well, the first thing to say about the greening of Bob
Hawke is it's not a recent phenomenon. In the election
campaign which brought us to Government in the beginning of

my own Party and certainly against the total opposition of

LAUNCH OF STATEMENT ON THE ENVIRONMENT
WENTWORTH, NSW
JULY 1989
This morning's journey through three States, culminating in
this launch at Wentworth, symbolises two realities about our
environment. It shows in a graphic way that the degradation
of our environment is not simply a local problem, nor a
problem for one State or another, nor for the Commonwealth
alone. Rather, the damage being done to our environment is
