Thirty nine years ago today an atomic bomb destroyed the
Japanese city of Hiroshima. Three days later a second
weapon was dropped on the city of Nagasaki. Nuclear weapons
have not since been used in war but the world's stockpile
of these weapons has grown from a mere handful in 1945 to
in excess of 50,000 today.
The memory of the appalling sacrifices made by the people
of Hiroshima and Nagasaki must never dim. Avoiding nuclear
war has become an absolute imperative. Nothing less than

I greatly welcome the announcement by the Victorian State
Government and Alcoa of Australia Limited, that agreement
has been reached on the development of the Portland
Aluminium, Smelter.
This project will be important to sustaining the strong
recovery that is evident in the Victorian economy, and the
Australian economy as a whole.
It is an immensely important project in itself, and will
give a particular lift to the construction and heavy

I am very pleased to have been given the opportunity to open
this Exhibition.
This Exhibition provides Australians with a rare
opportunity: an oppportunity to experience in this country
the full range of work of one of the world's mas~ ter artists
the work of a dominating personality who has significantly
influenced the era in which we live.

financial system.

The Prime Minister, Mr. Hawke, and the Pizgemier of New South
Wales, Mr. Wran, today jointly announced-. t-hat rewards
totalling $ 500,000 were being offered for information leading to
the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible
for attacks on members of the Family Court of Australia. These
were The murder of Jus tice Opas
The bombing of the home of Mr. Justice Gee
The bombing of the home of Mr. Justice Watson,
in which Mrs. Watson was murdered.

I spoke to David Lange last night and offered him the
warmest congratulations of the Australian Governmnent and
the Australian Labor Party on the New Zealand Labor
Party's handsome electoral victory.
I offered him the fullest co-operation of the Australian
Government in achieving an even stronger relationship
between our two countries.
I look forward to renewing personal contact with Mr. Lange
in Port Moresby and Tuvalu next month.
