TRANSCRIPT PRESS CONFERENCE 1 NOVEMBER 1984
E. O. E. PROOF ONLY
PM: Well ladies and gentlemen you've had the opportunity of
reading the Government's response to the final report of
CommissioneruCostigan. I simply want at the outset to refer to
that aspect of the statement which draws attention to the position
of the Leader of the opposition and . i'm certain that the people of
Australia will contrast the wild and totally baseless allegations
that were made inside and outside the Parliament by the Leader of

GOVERN1MENT TAXATION POLICY STATEMENT
The economic policies of the Government, and the approach
that has been used in developing and implementing those
policies, have produced dramatic improvements for all
Australians since March, 1983:
the creation of over 260,000 new jobs against the loss of
almost 200,000 in the last twelve months of the Coalition
Government; halving the inflation rate from double that of the rest
of the industrialised world to an underlying rate around

TRANSCRIPT OF PRESS CONFERENCE, PARLIAMENT HOUSE, ON TAXATION
POLICY STATEMENT 31 OCTOBER 1984
PM: Ladies and gentlemen, the statement that you have before you
provides, I believe, the starkest possible contrast between the
Opposition and the Government in regard to tax policy. This
statement that you have outlines a coherent reasoned plan and
importantly an achievable program for genuine tax reform. Its a
program, as you can see, for a complete overhaul of the taxation

FOR MEDIA 31 OCTOBER 1984
I have sent the following message to Hlis Excellency
Mr Zail Singh, the President of India:
I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn that
Prime Minister Ghandi has died as a result of the shameful
act of violence perpetrated earlier today.
The Australian Government deplores this wanton act of
terrorisma.
Mrs Ghandi was an outstanding leader whose courage, strength
and guidance will be greatly missed, not only by the people
of India, but throughout the world. In Australia, she worked

NATIONAL ROAD SAFETY SYMPOSIUM,
CANBERRA, 30 OCTOBER 1094
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Road safety is a matter of continuing national concern.
The road toll is one of our moqt horrific social
problems. In fact more Australians have been killed on our roads
in the last 12 years than died on active service in
World War II.
Putting the same point another way, more Australians
died on our roads in the first four months of 1984 than
during action in both the Korean and Vietnam wars
