or the government's draft White Paper its preferred position
has been made public today and I think we ought to emphasise
that. There's a long way to go before the government is able to

Employers who provide child care facilities for their
employees are eligible for a range of tax deductions under
the Income Tax Assessment Act.
My Department recently sought clarification from the
Australian Taxation Office on the applicability of the
relevant sections of the Act to the provision of child care
facilities. As a result, the Commissioner of Taxation,
Mr Boucher, has advised of a wide range of deductions.
It is the Government's policy to expand the provision of

Her Majesty the Queen has been pleased to approve in principle
a recommendation by the Government for the establishment of a
medal to recognise distinguished service by members of Australian
police forces.
The new award, to be known as the Australian Police Medal,
will carry an entitlement to the use of post-nominals.
The APM will form part of the Australian system of honours
and awards and will be awarded in the name of the Sovereign
as Queen of Australia.
The formal criteria for the Medal will be announced when the

It gives me great pleasure to be here tonight to join
with you in celebrating AAP's 50th anniversary.
Many people in the community, with the exception, of
course, of those here tonight, know of AAP only from the
letters at the end of a story appearing in a newspaper.
It has been said that AAP, whoever he or she is, must be
the hardest working Journalist around.

Lumeah. This day is the culmination of ten years dedication and
commitment on the part of many people. Outstanding
among them has been Virginia Davey previously the
welfare officer at Lumeah; a woman of tireless energy,
she is being especially honoured today.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT INITIATIVE GRANTS
The Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Bicentenary,
Mr Barry Cohen, MP today announced a $ 17.5 million grants program
aimed at helping local government authorities around Australia to
undertake Bicentennial activities in 1988.
Mr. Cohen said that under the Local Government Initiative Grants
Program each local government authority in Australia would be
eligible for a grant of $ 2,000 plus $ 1 per head of population in
