PM: I'm sorry to keep you waiting. I just want to make
a few comments on the national scene and then one about
the Queensland scene, if I may, before I make myself
available to you for questions.
The most significant single thing I think that came out
of last night's debate was the stark revelation of the
Opposition Leader's recipe for economic disaster in this
country. He talked at one and the same time about the fiscal

JOURNALIST: Mr Hawke, when did you find out about the
New Zealand change of mind?
PM: Well I must say that when I was in New Zealand the
Prime Minister indicated to me that this was the likely
outcome but he obviously didn't want me to say anything
about it. I am particularly grateful at this change of
position by New Zealand because it's not just another
country but it is the country after whom the convention,

KERR: Just three months ago the Prime minister and I sat
in this very room to announce the establishment of
TasPact, the joint Commonwealth and Tasmanian
Government's Task Force on Tasmanian issBue.
At the time the TasPact arrangements were announced, the
Prime Minister indicated that it would be an actionorientated
program designed to bring about substantial
results in the shortest possible time.

suggest that the pattern of this campaign has become very
clear now. You have Andrew Peacock running around this
country prepared to make every sort of promise,
commitments which are unfunded, a $ 6 billion credibility
gap which means a blowout or the budget deficit, which
associated with their refusal to name any wages target

MICRO-ECONOMIC REFORM: THE FOURTH TERM AGENDA

Last Friday, after I called upon the Governor-General to
recommend an election be held on 24 March, ' I outlined to the
media in Canberra the vital issues facing the Australian
people in this election campaign.
I said that the election will determine whether we continue
forward into the 1990' s, creating a fair society, an
efficient and productive economy and a healthy environment
