Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,
A notice in the Ballarat Courier on the 12th of June 1886 was
a model of precision. In simple unique terms it said:
' IMPORTANT NOTICE TO SHEARERS: A MEETING OF SHEARERS WILL BE
HELD FERNS HOTEL, STURT STREET THIS SATURDAY EVENING AT
8 O'CLOCK. BUSINESS: RE-ESTABLISHING A SHEARERS' UNION ALL

The British official gift to Australia for the Bicentenary will
be a specially commissioned sail training ship.
The ship will be sailed to Australia by a joint crew of young
Britons and Australians to participate in the Tall Ships Event in
1988 and will then be handed over to Australia.
The British Prime Minister, Mrs Thatcher, has written offering
the ship to Australia and I will be writing to thank her for the
British Government's offer.

Friends, It gives me very great pleasure to be here today. And that is
not something that I just say in a formal sense to you.
As I was able to say in the Federal Parliament in 1984 when the
opposition had sought to make something of a political issue out
of immigration and did themselves a very great disservice in the

Today I received a letter from the President of the United
States, Mr Reagan, dealing with his response to the terrorist
attacks on Rome and Vienna.
The issues raised in the letter will be carefully considered by
the Government and Cabinet will decide whether any measures
should be adopted in respect of Australia's relations with Libya.

Their Excellencies the Governor-General and Lady Stephen
will be visiting Thailand from 14 to 21 January 1987 at
the invitation of His Majesty the King of Thailand.
Their Excellencies' visit to Thailand will follow the
very successful visit to Australia in December 1985 of
the Crown Prince of Thailand, HRH-Maha Vajiralongkorn.
During their stay, as well as visiting Bangkok and
Chiang Mai, Their Excellencies will travel to the
ancient capital of Sukhothai, including a visit to the

of service to Australia. on behalf of the Government of Australia
I congratulate past and present-Naval personnel on this
outstanding record.
The RAN is an integral element of the Australian Defence Force.
AS such it trains for war to preserve peace but, if necessary, to
help defend Australia's freedom and prosperity. The need for such

ACTING PRIME MINISTER
FOR MEDIA20 DECEMBER 1985
The Government has granted an extension of time for the Royal
Commission headed by Mr Justice Stewart to present its report
relating to -unlawful telephone interceptions.
Mr Justice Stewart was due to report not later than 31 December
1985. He is now to furnish his report by not later than
April 1986.
The extension reflects advice from Mr Justice Stewart that his
work under the relevant terms of reference is well advanced but
