The Australian Permanent Representative to the United Nations,
His Excellency Mr Richard Woolcott, will make the following
statement to the Security Council later today!
" Australia speaks today mindful of the primary responsibility
of the Security Council for the maintenance of international
peace and security. World attention is focussed on this body
and people around the world look to us to take positive action
to achieve a peaceful resolution of the issue before us. We

JOURNALIST: Prime Minister, why didn't you pledge support for Mr
Reagan's action in Parliament?
PM: My statement was a statement which was relevant to the
circumstances. We were not advised in advance, asked in advance
for support. The statement was carefully calculated to convey the
position of the Australian Government and that is that we want
hostilities to cease. In a discussion that the Foreign Minister

The Australian Government was advised by the US
Administration early this morning of immediately
impending military action against Libya. President
Reagan has since confirmed that the US has taken
military action against targets which it regards as
supporting terrorism.
The Australian Government has counselled restraint by
both the US and Libya in the course of the developing
tensions between them. It deeply regrets that this
conflict has taken place and urges both sides to suspend

Mr Ian Castles, formerly Secretary Department of Finance, has
been appointed Australian Statistician.
As Australia's major statistical authority, the Australian Bureau
of Statistics plays a vital role in providing the information
needed to provide a firm basis for decision-making and for
community understanding of economic and social issues. The
Government is committed to its continuing development as an
objective statistical organisation maintaining the highest
professional standards, thereby ensuring the availability of

Mr G K Kolts, OBE, QC, is to be appointed as Commonwealth
Ombudsman. Mr Kolts has been First Parliamentary Counsel for
over five years, and will take up the position of Ombudsman on
1 July.
Mr Kolts has outstanding qualifications for the Ombudsman
appointment, with a long and sustained involvement in matters
of administrative law.
Until Mr Kolts takes up his new appointment, Air Vice Marshal
J C Jordan, AO will continue to act as Commonwealth Ombudsman.

Last June, when I announced tha Australian Made Campaign I
was confident it would be a success.
I was confident that Australians were waiting for a campaign
like this and were prepared to do their bit for the country
by choosing Australian made products where they represented
value for money.
But I am pleased to say that my high hopes for the campaign
have been well and truly exceeded.
