DIFFERENT FIELDS, ARE FIRM FRIENDS OF AUSTRALIA. IN THE TWO
YEARS SI'NCE I WAS LAST IN bEIJING I AM GLAD THAT WE
PERSONALLY HAVE KEPT CLOSELY IN TOUCH WITH EACH OTHER AND
THAT WE AND OTHER LEADERS OF OUR GOVERNMENTS HAVE BEEN ABLE
FREQUENTLY TO RENEW FRIENDSHIPS THROUGH THE VISITS OF CLOSE

ANNOUNCEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER
IN THE PRESENCE OF MY FRIEND AND VERY FORMIDABLE OPPONENT
ON THE TENNIS COURT, VICE PREMIER WAN Li, I AM HAPPY TO
ANNOUNCE THAT IN PRINCIPLE AGREEMENT HAS BEEN REACHED TO
ESTABLISH A TENNIS TOURNAMENT BETWEEN AUSTRALIA AND CHINA.
TENNIS IS AN INCREASINGLY POPULAR SPORT IN CHINA AND I KNOW
THA fHE RECENT VISIT OF PAT CASH GENERATED GREAT INTEREST.
THIS IS A SPORT IN WHICH AUSTRALIA HAS A LONG TRADITION.
THE CONCEPT IS TO CREATE AN ANNUAL TENNIS CHALLENGE WHICH

PM: I have just completed a little over three hours discussion
with Premier Zhao. As you would appreciate they have covered
a wide range of international issues in the political area
the economic area and of course a number of bilateral matters
of importance to us. I think it is important to indicate at
the outset that Premier Zhao in his opening statement indicated
the very great significance with the Government of China attaches

PM: Nonsense.

Canberra and Beijing are extremely poor? Do you think you

PM: Not if you have got contacts.

policital economic advisers back?

in March 1983 and his visit to Japan this time is his secondI
visit to Japan and last time when he was in Japan was in
