JOINT STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER AND THE MINISTER
FOR COMMUNITY SERVICES AND HEALTH, MR HOWE
The Federal Government has today presented National and
State Awards recognising contributions made by employers
to employing people with disabilities.
The Prime Minister's Employer of the Year Awards were
established by the Federal Government to recognise
employers who have provided outstanding employment and
training opportunities for people with disabilities.

Premiers and Chief Ministers, I extend a warm welcome to you
all. There are certainly a number of new faces around the
table since we last met: Wayne Goss, Michael Field, Trevor
Kaine and, of course, Australia's first woman premier, Carmen
Lawrence. The older hands are welcome back too; I am pleased
to see John Bannon, John Cain, Nick Greiner and Marshall
Perron joining us once again.

PM: As a nation it's becoming increasingly clear that we
do have to examine, in much more detail and with much
more commitment, the nature of the Federal-State
relationship. Not with a view to the Commonwealth
scoring off the States or vice versa, but to try and
address the issue of how we best deliver services to
people and to look at how best we co-operate to create a
competitive, efficient economy.

IMMIGRATION, LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND ETHNIC AFFAIRS, MR HAND
PRC nationals in Australia on 20 June 1989 will be able to
stay in Australia for four years under a s pecial category of
temporary residence permit. No PRC national in Australia on
June 1989 will be required during the four years or
subsequently to return to China against their will unless
they have seriously breached Australian laws.

New Zealand Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Geoffrey Palmer will
visit Australia from 28 June to 3 July 1990 as a guest of
the Australian Government.
This will be Mr Palmer's first visit to Australia as Prime
Minister and it reciprocates my visit to New Zealand in
February this year to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of
the Treaty of Waitangi.
Mr Palmer's visit coincides with the achievement on 1 July
of full free trade in goods between Australia and
New Zealand under CER.
