I don't really think that-what I am proposing to do this morning
is to give a lecture. 7That I thought I was doing was to give
a welcome, and indeed, that is what I do with great warmth on
behalf of the Government of Australia and the people of Australa
to all of you who are gathered together here in what is our
National Capital.

NATIONAL EXPORT WEEK
Statement by the Prime Minister, Mr John Gorton
A National Export Week will be held from 14th 19th
October of this year. The Week, which will be sponsored by the Export
Development Council, will be aimed primarily at an expansion of exports
of manufactures. There will be extensive contacts with manufacturers
during this week in each State in the Commonwealth. These activities
will include seminars, workshops and lectures on all practical aspects of

AUSTRAL IAN ADVISORY-CMMTTEE
Statement by the Prime Minister, Mr. ohn Gorton
The Government has appointed an Advisory Committee to
help develop plans for Australia's participation in the World Exhibition
to be held in Osaka, Japan in 1970.
The twelve-man committee comprises prominent
Australians representing a wide cross-section of our community,
ranging from industry and commerce to academic life and the arts. This
Committee, under the chairmanship of Sir John Overall, Commissioner

It is for me the second occasion in quite a short time that
I have had the pleasure and the honour of speaking to Australians who

THE LODGE PREPARES FOR EXPRESSWAY
Preliminary surveying began around the Lodge in Canberra
today in preparation for the widening of Adelaide Avenue.
The roadwork, which is necessary to complete a dual
highway lining Canklerra with new suburbs in the Woden Valley, will
extend into a large section of the large gardens. The Prime Minister,
Mr. Gorton, gave authority for the acquisition of the land so that there
would be no delay in the expressway project, which will convert the

APPOINTNENT OF PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSIONER

The Rt. Hon. J. G. Gorton. M. P.
The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Gorton, i
announced tonight that the Government had. appointed
Mr. A. B. McFarlane, as a Commissioner
of the Public Service Board. Mr. McFarlane, Secretary,
Department of Air, for the last twelve years, succeeds"-.:.
Mr. K. E. Grainger, who retired on 21st March on
reaching the age of 69.

PRIME MINISTER'S VISIT TO THE UNITED STATES
Arrangements for the Prime Minister's visit to the United
States at the en~ d of this month are now well advanced.
Mr. Gorton will leave on 23 May, returning on 2 June.
President Johnson is putting a Presidential jet at the Prime Minister's
disposal from Honolulu, and Mr. Gorton will be a guest at Blair House
during his two days in Washington.
Mrs. Gorton will be accompanying the Prime Minister.
There will also be a small party of officials and personal staff.

PRIME MINISTER TO VISIT SOUTH-EAST ASIA
The Prime Minister is to visit Viet Nam, Singapore,
Malaysia and Indonesia next month.
He plans to leave Canberra on 5 June, only three
days after arriving back from the United States. The South-East
Asian visit will last twelve days, and he will return to Canberra on
17 June. Precise details are not yet available but the Prime
Minister is expected to spend three days in Viet Nam, about two days
each in Singapore and Malaysia, and three and a half days in Indonesia.

PARIS AS SITE FOR VIET NAM TALKS
Comment by the Prime Minister, Mr John Gorton
The Australian Government welcomes the fact that a
site for talks has now been agreed between the United States and Hanoi,
and that a date for beginning the talks has been set.
The selection of the sit accords with the views of the
Australian Government which has been kept constantly informed over
the past few weeks by the United States Government as to suggestions
for a site, and which has publicly and privately expressed the view that
