FOR PRESS: VISIT BY MR LESTER PEARSON
The Right Honourable Lester B. Pearson, cu-r ty
Chairman of the World Bank Commission on International Development
and former Prime Minister of Canada, will visit Australia in April
following discussions in a number of countries on matters concerning
economic development and aid.
Mr Pearson will arrive in Australia on Monday 14 April and
leave on Monday 21 April.
In Canberra he will be received by the Governor-General
and will call on the Prime Minister. He will also have discussions with

Mr. Chairman, Mr. Chalk, Parliamentary Colleagues, Ladies and
Gentlemen: This is, of course, not by any means the first visit I
have made to Queensland as Prime Minister. Indeed, I am not quite
sure, but I think it might be the fourth or fifth or something of that
kind. It is a very happy occasion for a visit, to be able to open this
building, although I understand it has been in use for a month.

ROYAL VISIT 1969
The Commonwealth Director for the visit by Their
Royal Highnesses, The Duke and Duchess of Kent, in August 1969 is
Mr J. H. Scholtens, C. V. 0. Assistant Secretary, Ceremonial and
Hospitality Branch, Prime Minister's Department.
As announced on 30 December 1968, The Duke and
Duchess are expected to begin their visit in Canberra, from where thei
will travel to Port Moresby where The Duke will open the Third South
Pacific Games on Wednesday 13 August. Their Royal Highnesses will

NEW DATE FOR FIVE POWER TALKS
Statement by the Prime Minister, Mr. John Gorton
The Five Power talks in Canberra will now be held
on 19 arid 20 June. In London last month, the Prime Ministers of
Malaysia, Singapore, New Zealand and Australia, and the British
Defence Minister, agreed to a meeting in Canberra in May.
Subsequently, the Malaysian Government asked that
the dates be varied and the new arrangements have been made in
consultation between the five governmrents.

ACQUISITION OF WILLIAM WESTALL DRAWINGS
FOR NATIONAL LIBRARY

The Commonwealth Government has purchased from
the Royal Commonwealth Society in London an important collection
of 139 drawings and water colours by William Westall, the young
landscape artist who accompanied Matthew Flinders on his
circumnavigation of Australia in 1801-3. These pictures, depicting
parts of the Australian coastline as it appeared before European

VISIT TO CANADA
Statement by the Prime Minister, Mr. John Gorton
I have been delighted to accept an invitation from
Mr. Trudeau to make a visit to Canada on Thursday, 3 April,
after my meeting with President Nixon in Washington.
I am looking forward to this opportunity for an
exchange of views with another Commonwealth country which
has an increasing interest in the Pacific region.
