Q. Prime Minister, you appeared to become quite irritated during a recent airport impromptu news conference when once again the subject of Australia's attitude to Russia's presence in South East Asian waters was raised. Do you feel that speculation on this topic has more or less got out of hand?

Q. What is your reaction, Mr. Prime Minister, to the
demonstration outside?
PM. Well, I think it was a perfectly peaceful and orderly
gathering. There was no attempt to use any force, nothing of that kind.
I think it would have been more interesting if their voices and their
singing had been a little bit better, but that is the only criticism I
would care to make:

AWARD CF VICTORIA CROSS FOR GALLANTRY IN VIETNAM
Statement by the Prime Minister, Mr. John Gorton
Her Majesty The Queen has awarded the Victoria Cross to
a member of the Australian Army Training Team in Vietnam, Warrant
Officer Class 2 Keith Payne of Stafford Heights, Brisbane.
Warrant Officer Payne showed outstanding devotion to duty
and leadership under the most hazardous conditions during an operation
with a battalion of a Special Forces Unit near the Cambodian/ Laotian/

I deeply regret that Allen Fairhall has decided to
retire. We have worked together since 1949 and he will be a great
loss to the Parliament and to the Cabinet. But he told me some time
ago that he felt he should, in the interests of his health, not stand for

The Prime Minister, Mr. John Gorton, today announced
the appointment of two Deputy High Commissioners for Australia in
Britain. Mr. R. W. Boswell, 0. B. E. Secretary to the
Department of National Development, is to succeed Mr. J. L. Knott,
C. B. who was appointed Director-General, Posts and Telegraphs,
in December last year.
