Mr. Whitlam has reached new heights of arrogance.

MR. WHITLAM'S APOLOGIA
Statement by the Prime Mvinister, Mr. John Gorton
Mr. Whitlam is clearly trying to extricate himself from
the result of those indiscretions which have led native leaders in New
Guinea to tell him to pack up and go home and cease fermenting trouble.
The facts are that Mr. Whitlam made a flying visit to a
troubled area the Gazelle Peninsula. Once there he engaged in illconsidered
demagogy and increased the chances of trouble and violence

From the Prime Mlinister, Mr. John Gorton
Today we begin a new decade as well as a year of
special significance to all Australians.
For we will, in this year, celebrate the bicentenary
of Captain Cook's discovery of a completely undeveloped land and
we will begin a decade of development unparalleled in Australia's
past history. I believe that this decade will see us grow in strength

STATEMENT ON RADIO AND TELEVISION BY THE PRIME
-MINST EK, 1KJJHTGORTDN 16 DECEMBER 1969
Tonight I want to talk to you quite briefly on possible
future developments in Vietnam.
In my Policy Speech before the last election, I had this
to say to the Australian people
" Should there be developments ( in Vietnam) which result in
plans for continuing reduction of United States Forces over
a period, we would expect to be phased in to that programme."
