ECONOMIC CONSULTATIONS
Statement by the Prime Minister, Mr John Gorton
In Sydney today, the Government met with representatives
of industry and commerce. Ministers conferred with representatives
of national organisations in three groups primary industry,
manufacturing industry and commerce,
These economic consultations, which are held at
half-yearly intervals, were once again valuable in providing Ministers
with an appreciation of the views of those directly involved in commerce

Madam President, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen:
Thank you very much for your welcome, Madam
President. My wife and I are glad indeed to be with you on this
occasion and to have the opportunity of extending, on behalf of
the Commonwealth Government, a welcome to all delegates, but
particularly, perhaps to those delegates who have come from overseas.

AGREEMENT ON BARRIER REEF CIL DRILLING ENQUIRY
The Prime Minister said he was delighted with the outcome of
the conference with the Premier of Queensland.
Agreement had been reached that there should be an enquiry into
the possible damage which might be caused to the Barrier Reef through drilling
for oil. The enquiry was to be an open enquiry with s ufficient authority to
collect any evidence required. All interested parties could appear before the
Committee and state their views, and adduce evidence to support those views.

MR TRUDEAUS VISIT
The Prime Minister warmly welcomed Mr Trudeau's
announcement that he would visit Australia before going to Japan for
Canada' s National Day at Expo 70 on May 27th.
Mr Gorton said that Mr Trudeau had known since they
first met at the Prime Ministers' Conference a year ago that Australia
would be more than delighted to welcome him at any time he could come
and talk to us. Mr Trudeau's visit was tangible evidence of Canada's
keen and growing interest in even closer ties with other Commonwealth

PRACTICAL TRAINING FOR YOUNG AUSTRALIAN COMPOSERS

On the advice of the Advisory Board, Commonwealth Assistance to
Australian Composers, four young composers have been select ed to gain advanced
practical experience in the techniques of orchestral and Instrumental writing.
The successful young composers, selected after the project had been
widely advertlsed, are Miss Elaine Doe of Brisbane, Mr. Kim Williams of Sydney and

AUSTRALIA DAY MESSAGE

This year our National Day has a special significance.
Just two hundred years ago Captain Cook made his voyage of discovery
along our east coast. And eighteen years later the arrival of the
First Fleet set the date which we observe as our National Day.
On this day we can look back on our history and draw
hope and inspiration from dangers and difficulties overcome.
And we can reflect on tasks ahead of us and what we

There has been an exchange of telegrams between Queensland arnd
the Commonwealth today in relation to Federal Government assistance the
wake of Cyclone Ada.
The following telegram was received from the Queensland Premier,

DEVASTATION AND OFFICIAL REPORTS rIT IS APPARENT THE EFFECTS OF

EXHIBITION OF CONTEMPORARY-AU' ITAIAN ART

A collection of contemporary Australian art, is aboutto go
on exhibition in South-East Asia.
Opening in Singapore on Friday, the exhibition will
subsequently be seen in Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia and
Indonesia. It will return to Australia in mid-June.
The exhibition comprises 46 paintings, prints and
sculptures. It has been selected by the Commonwealth Art Advisory

The Government has purchased the well-known Ferguson Collection of Australiana for the National Library in Canberra.

This Collection also covers the Pacific Islands and Captain Cook's voyages, and includes an original manuscript journal kept by James Burney during 1772-1773 while on Cook's second  voyage.

This timely acquisition will join two other Cook journals now on exhibition in the Library one a copy of Cook's own journal of the same voyage and the other a manluScript journal in Cook's own hand of the first voyage ( 1768 to 1771).

ECONOMIC CONSULTATIONS
Statement by the Prime Minister, Mr John Gorton
Invitations have been extended to representatives of national organisations
to meet with Ministers next month.
These consultations, whch are held at half-yearly intervals, are most
useful in keeping Ministers informed of the views of those directly involved in
commerce and industry.
On 4 February, Ministers will meet three groups of representative
organisations Primary Industry, Manufacturing Industry and Commerce.
