A Chinese Vice-Premier is to visit Australia soon. The
Vice-Premier is ranked third most important man in China today.
Vice Premier -Li Xiannian is the most active member of
the present leadership of China to have survived in senior
positions thrcughout the Cultural Revolution period. The
visit., was confirmed yesterday when the Vice-Premier had a
farewell meeting with the Australian Ambassador to China.

CYCLONE SIMON
The Prime Minister today sent a message to the Acting Premier
of Queensland expressing concern over the widespread wind and
rainstorms that are lashing the Queensland coast causing damage
to property and danger to life as a result of Cyclone Simon's
passage southwards.
Mr Fraser said that while he had not received a full report on
the extent of the damage caused by Cyclone Simon, the Commonwealth
stands ready to provide Queensland with whatever aid proves

ELECTORATE TALK
Last week in Federal Parliament, by an overwhelming vote,
the House of Representatives condemned the invasion of
Afghanistan by the Soviet Union as a gross violation of the
United Nations charter; as an act of aggression and tyranny,
creating potentially the greatest threat to international peace
-and security since 1945.

It really is a wonderful occasion, being asked to open this
Club which has had so much effort put into it and which has

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN FIRES
The Prime Minister today expressed concern at the
injuries-to people and damage to property suffered as
a result of the current fires in the Mt. Lofty and
Cape Jervis regions of South Australia. In particular
Mr. Fraser expressed sympathy to the three firemen
who are now hospitalised.
In expressing this concern to the Premier of
South Australia, Mr. Fraser offered the State assistance

JOINT PRESS STATEMENT
The Prime Minister, the Minister for Home Affairs, and the
members of the National Executive of the Australian Olympic
Federation, met today to discuss the question of Australia's
participation in the Olympic Gamnes, and to create an
opportunity for an exchange of views in relation to the
Prime Minister's statement that the Government will remain
strongly opposed to the participation of an Australian team
in the Olympic Games in Moscow.

A series of bombs in Rhodesia's-capital, Salisbury, has killed at least
2 people and damaged a church and a luxury hotel.
In the elections so far the Rhodesian Front.-Party, led by Mr Smith,
appears headed for a clean sweep for the 20 seats reserved for white
voters. The rest of the 100 seats in the new Parliament will be contested
by black candidates at the end of this month.

The latest jobless figures out today put Australia mployed
last month at 382,000, about 6.8% of the full-time workforce. The
Bureau of Statistics says a jump of 27,000 on the December figures
was caused mainly by school leavers. There was a slight improvement
against the January figures last year. According to Mr Viner, the
Minister for Employment and Youth Affairs, Australia is starting 1980
