COM: PENSATION ISSUES ARISING FROM ACTIO:; AGCAINST
SOVIET UNION AND IRAN
The Government has considered in detail the question of
compensation for firms, organisations and individuals affected
by our actions taken against the Soviet Union and Iran. Our
actions in these cases have been designed to express Australia's
strong condemnation of the invasion of Afghanistan and of the
seizure and continued holding of the US hostages. The specific
range of measures applied in each of these distinct cases

Rockhampton is the centre of a wonderful part of Australia.
I can remember when it was possible for me to just call in
unofficially and very briefly a year ago and I was asked
if I could come back next year arid open the Show. It was
something that I was very, very happy to accept.

DEATH OF PRIME MINISTER OHIRA
I was greatly saddened to hear this morning of the death of
Prime Minister Ohira and I am sending my condolences to
Mrs Ohira, members of the Prime Minister's family and to the
people of Japan.
Mr Ohira contributed greatly to the strengthening of friendship
and understanding between Australia and Japan. His visit to
Australia last January brought a personal warmth to the strong
ties between our two Governments and peoples. He sought to

NORTHERN TERRITORY ELECTIONS
The Prime Minister today sent the following telegram to
the Chief Minister of the Northern Territory,
Mr. Paul Everingham: " My warmest congratulations on your
victory. It is clearly an endorsement of the sound
government your Coalition has given to the
Northern Territory for the past two years.
The Coalition Partners in Canberra welcome
the opportunity to continue our work together
in the future development of the Territory."

QUEENSLAND DROUGHT ASSISTANCE TO PRIMARY PRODUCERS
The Prime Minister today announced that, following consideration
of an approach from the Premier, the Commonwealth Government
has agreed to provide further drought assistance to Queensland.
The Prime Minister was speaking in Surfers Paradise at the
Annual Convention of the United Graziers' Association of
Queensland. The announcement incorporates extensions to the
Natural Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements. The following
will apply from today:-

Australia's Silver Jubilee gift to the Queen, the racing filly,
Australia Fair, has arrived in the United Kingdom, fit and well.
Australia Fair left Sydney last Friday by Qantas transport
aircraft, and was transhipped in San Francisco to a Seabord
Airlines transport for the remainder of the flight. She arrived
this rorning. informed that Australia Fair is in splendid condition and

ADDRESS AT THE AUSTRALIA-JAPAN SYMPOSIUM
I welcome the opportunity to join this symposium. Its very
convening is evidence of the importance of the relationship
between Australia and Japan.
I congratulate Nihon Keizai Shimbun and the Australian Financial
Review for their support. Both newspapers have made an important
and valuable contribution to the mutal understanding of Japan
and Australia and to the analysis of the direction that our
relationship has taken.
