AUSTRALIA FOR SEA SURVEILLANCE IN THE INDIAN OCEAN AND

of B-52s through Australia were temporarily suspended to allow

It is Commonwealth Day tomorrow, so it is opportune to remind
all Australians of the relevance of the Commonwealth, because
the Commonwealth does mean much to Australia. It is
particularly significant in 1981 because the Statute of
Westminster, the British Parliamentary Act which led to the
I Commonwealth is 50 years old, and the CommonwealthHeads of
Government Meeting will be held in Australia for the first time.

COM14EMORATIING COMMONWTEALTH DAY
Members will recall that a decision has been made by the
members of the Commonwealth to set aside the second Monday
in March each year as a day on which the purpose and
achievements of the Commonwealth would be duly marked. As
this is the last sitting day before this year's Commonwealth
Day I would like to take this opportunity to make a brief
statement to that end.

LATE SENATOR JOHN KNIGHT
M4r. Speaker, I move that the House expresses its deep regret
at the death this day of Senator John William Knight, a
Senator for the Australian Capital Territory from 1975 and.
Government Whip in the Senate from 1980, places on record its
appreciation of his long and meritorious public service, and
tenders its profound sympathy to his widow and the members of
his family in their bereavement.

With the completion of the last emergency relief flight
between Australia and New Zealand today, I would like to pay
tribute to the Air Force personnel and all others associat , ed
with the exercise, whc worked hard and long hours to see it
* through successfully.
They have good reason to be well satisfied with their work.
All Australians have reason to congratulate the RAAF and the
RNZAF on a job well done.
