MEDIA FRIDAY, 19 MARCH 1982
DAVID BARNETT, O. B. E.
It is with regret that I announce the resignation
of my Press Secretary, David Barnett, as from the
end of this month.
David was my first permanent staff member, joining
me a few days after I became Leader of the Parliamentary
Liberal Party in 1975.
He has given me and the Government loyal and unstinting
service. The position of Press Secretary has been
extremely demanding and I am grateful for what he
has done. I have greatly valued David's skills
and dedication.

Howard, last Thursday confirms the Government's concern for
the objective of home ownership. Inabed it is under Liberal
Governments in the post-war period that the dream of home
ownership has become a reality for the great majority of
Australian households. Today almost 72% of Australian households
own or are buying their own home, compared to around 50
in the late 1940s. Among young adults, the improverents. in

" THIS WEEK IN CANBERRA" BTV6
The Premier of Victoria, Lindsay Thompson, last week outlined
his policies for the next three years of Liberal Government
in this State. He was able to present an impressive record
of Liberal achievement in Victoria, and his policies for this
election are the right ones for the l980s.
For decades Victoria has been a great productive centre for
the whole of Australia. Despite its comparative smallness,
Victoria produces about a quarter of the total value of

ELECTORATE. TALK
A few days aglo, in a speech to the Rarliament and to the
nation, I drew attention to the increasingly troubled and
uncertain worcld scene; to the tensions and threats to
international security that exist; and to the prolonged recession
in Europe and North America which has reduced world trade and
world growth to a virtual standstill.
We in Australia cannot ignore those developments. We live in
a world that is increasingly interdependent, and we are

CIVIC RECEPTION, BENALLA
I would like to thank you very much indeed for that welcome.
I think we can for an ecumenical movement at least for today
and maybe it: would be better if it could last for longer than
a day. But, it would seem to me that a large part of what
we are seeing right here is what Australia is all about.
I think we really do believe that this is one of the best
countries in the world to live in. I believe it is one of
the best countries in th6 world to bring children up in.
