ADDRESS AT RETURN DINNER GIVEN BY PRIME MINISTER, PORT MORESBY
It is indeed an honour for me to be the first Australian
Prime Minister to visit Papua New Guinea since your indeoendence
celebrations seventeen months ago.
Although I have visited Papua New Guinea on three previous occasions,
this extended visit has enabled me not only to have substantive
and valuable discussions with you, Mr Prime Minister, your
colleagues, and the Leader of the Opposition, but has also allowied

MESSAGE TO THE KING OF JORDAN
I was shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Queen
Alia in the tragic accident. She won many hearts during
her visit to Australia with her grace and charm.
I convey to you and your. family and to the people of
Jordan the deepest sympathy of myself and my wife,
and the heartfelt condolence of the Australian Government
and people.

THE NATIONAL GALLERY
I have expressed no view on any of the applicants for Director
of the National Gallery.
I have been pressing for a considerable time for recommenC. ations
for Director of the National Gallery, and I have been
concerned that recommendations have not been put before now.
A report attributing to me certain views concerning applicants
is without any foundation in fact.
The matter in the first instance was one for recommendation
by the Gallery Council. It will be Cabinet that will make

AUSTRALIAN. AMBASSADOR TO UNESCO
The Prime Minister announced the appointment of Sir John Kerr
as Australian Ambassador to UNESCO.
Sir John, former Governor-General of Australia, retired in
December and is at present on a private tour overseas.
The position of Ambassador to UNESCO was created during the
administration of the former Government. The Ambassador was
withdrawn in September 1976 and his functions reverted to the
Ambassador to France, His Excellency Mr H. D. Anderson, O. B.. E.

A reduction in interest rates would be one of the best
things that could happen for the economy and for people in'the
community The Government wants to see a reduction in interest rates,
but is aware of the economic reality that this will only be
possible when the inflation rate is brought down.
That is why the Government is dedicated to the fight

The Labor Party was getting up to its old tricks in
wanzing to bring back the kind of policies that have contributed to
the worst inflation and unemployment in Australia's history, the
Deputy Prime Minister and Member for Richmond, Mr Anthony said in

damage being caused by inflation, and of the personal suffering of
individuals and families caused by unemployment.

I welcome this opportunity to talk to you about the economic
progress Australia has made in 1976, this Government's first
full year in office, and about the Government's economic
policies. We all remember that under Labor Australia's economic situation
was grave, and getting worse. There were no quick andq easy
solutions to the problems of high inflation, of high unemployment,

APPOINTMENT O? MR. K. C. 0. SHANN, CBE, AS CHAIRMAN OF THE
PUBLIC SERVICE BOARD
The Prime Minister, Mr. Malcolm Fraser, announced tcday that the
Government had appointed Mr. K. C. 0. Shann, CBE, as Chairman or
the Public Service Board.
Mr. Shann is currently the Australian Ambassador in Tokyo and his
appointment as High Commissioner in London was announced in
October 1976.
Mr. Fraser said that Mr. Shann had had a long and distinguished
career in service to Australia. He had been Australia's Ambassadcr
