Australia and Malta have a friendly and constructive relationship based on strong people-to-people and historical links.
The large and respected Maltese community in Australia makes a valuable contribution to Australia's vibrant culture. There are currently around 153,000 Australians of Maltese ancestry living in Australia and around 43,000 Australian residents were born in Malta.
Malta is a member of the European Union and President Fenech Adami's visit reflects a new era of creative engagement between Australia and Europe.
Australia's reinvigorated relationship with the European Union is founded on the Australia-European Union Partnership Framework Agreement signed in Paris in October 2008.
