Following consultations with the Governor-General, the Honourable
Sir William Deane AC KBE, I am pleased to announce the reappointment
of seven Councillors to the Council for the Order of Australia.
The Council meets twice a year to consider nominations and to make
recommendations for awards in the Order of Australia to the Governor-General.
Rear Admiral Peter Sinclair AC (rtd) will continue as chairman of
the Council which next meets on 5 and 6 August 1998.
The reappointed Councillors are:

I am also pleased to announce the appointment of a new Council member,
Dr Margaret Valadian AO MBE, Director, Aboriginal Education Centre,
Wollongong University.
Dr Valadian replaces Dr Lois O'Donoghue CBE AM. Dr O'Donoghue
served on the Council for many years and I would like to acknowledge
on behalf of the Government and myself, appreciation for the singular
contribution she made to the work of the Council.
All appointments are for two years.
I am delighted that these distinguished Australians have agreed to
continue and give freely of their time to this important national
committee. They bring to the Council for the Order of Australia a
breadth of experience and achievement which encompasses the whole
community and which all Australians can respect and admire.
