In recognition of Mr Mick Young's distinguished contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect, the Federal Government will accord him a State funeral.
Mr Young served in the House of Representatives from 1974-88, was Minister for Immigration, Local Government and Ethnic Affairs, Vice President of the Executive Council, Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Multicultural Affairs and National President of the Australian Labor Party in 1987-88.
He also served as Special Minister of State from 1983-87 and Leader of the House of Representatives from 1983-88.
The service will be held at St Mary's Cathedral, College St, Sydney on Friday April 12 at 12 noon, followed by a private cremation.
As a further mark of respect the Australian Flag will be flown at half mast on all Commonwealth buildings in Sydney and Canberra on the day of the funeral.
