STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER, THE HON P J KEATING, MP
PUBLIC SERVICE APPOINTMENTS
The Government will be recommending to the Governor-General
the appointment of Mr Michael Costello as Secretary to the
Department of Industrial Relations. He will take up this
appointment early next week.
Mr Costello, 43, has held a number of senior positions in
the foreign affairs portfolio, including Ambassador to the
United Nations. He has been Deputy Secretary of the
Department of~ Foreign Affairs and Trade since 1989.
Mr Graham Glenn, ' who has been the Secretary to the
Department of Industrial Relations since 1 March 1989, is
retiring fron the Australian Public Service. On behalf of
the Government, I express appreciation for the very
considerable contribution made by Mr Glenn during his career
especially in recent years when he has served as a member of
the Public SEtrvice Board, as Secretary of the Department of
Administrative Services, and most recently as Secretary of
the Department of Industrial Relations.
The Governmen~ t wishes to be able to continue to draw on Mr
Glenn's abilities and is exploring avenues of making the
best use of his wide-ranging skills and experience. The
Government i: recommending to the Governor-General that he
be appointed to the part-time office of the Chairperson of
the Commission for the Safety, Rehabilitation and
Compensation of Commonwealth Employees and, with effect
later in the year, as a member of the Australian Heritage
