Mr John Taylor has been appointed by the Governor-General in
Council as Auditor-General, commencing on 12 May 1988.
Mr Taylor has had a long and distinguished career in the
Public Service beginning with the Postmaster-General's
Department in 1952 and culminating in his most recent
appointment as Australia's Consul-General in New York from
1984 to 1988.
Prior to his appointment in New York, Mr Taylor was
Secretary to the Department of Aboriginal Affairs from 1981
to 1984, and a Commissioner of the Public Service Board from
1974 to 1981.
Mr Taylor has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the
University of Melbourne and the ANU and used his economic
skills in various senior positions in the Department of
Trade, the Tariff Board and the Prime Minister's Department
in the period from 1960 to 1974.
His qualifications and the range of his experience make him
particularly well qualified for appointment to the important
post of Auditor-General. 006001
