APPOINTMENT OF SECRETARY, DEPARTMENT OF THE TREASURY
Mr B. W. Fraser, Deputy Secretary, Department of the Treasury,
was today appointed Secretary of the Department, following
the retirement of the former Secretary, Mr J. O. Stone.
Mr Fraser was formerly Deputy Secretary, Department of Resources
and Energy and has held various positions in the Departments
of the Treasury and Finance.

BERNIE W. FRASER
Born in Junee, NSW age 43
Attended Junee High School; University of New England
( BA with majors in Economics); ANU ( various courses
on a part-time basis including Australian literature and
further economic studies).
Joined Commonwealth Public Service in 1961 Department of
National Development;
moved to Treasury in 1963;
Treasury representative in London 1970-1972;
transferred to Finance when the Treasury was split
in 1976 and promoted ' First Assistant Secretary,
General Expenditure Division;
transferred back to Treasury in 1979 as First Assistant
Secretary, Resource Allocation Division and moved
subsequently to the General Financial and Economic
Policy Division;
appointed Director, National Energy office in 1981
( re-designated Deputy Secretary, Department of Resources
and Energy);
transferred back to Treasury as Deputy Secretary,
Development and Taxation in January 1984, holding
responsibility for the divisions of Taxation and
Industry; Prices, Incomes and Development; and
Foreign Investment.
Interested in most sports, with particular affection for
rugby league and fishing.
