HIGH COURT JUSTICE APPOINTED TO PRIVY COUNCIL
The Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, announced today that
Sir Ninian Stephen, a Justice of the High Court of
Australia, had been appointed as a member of the Privy Council
by the Queen. The appointment of Sir Ninian follows similar
appointments of the Chief Justice, Sir Garfield Barwick, in
1964 and Sir Harry Gibbs in 1972.
The appointment follows the decision announced at the
conclusion of the Commonwealth Prime Ministers' Conference
. in 1962, to recommend the appointment of judges from the
Commonwealth who would then become available to sit on the
Judicial committee of the Privy Council.
Mr Fraser's announcement was made at the same time as a
similar announcement by the British Prime Minister, Mrs Thatcher,
in London.
