PAYMENT OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT GRANTS
QUEENSLAND
The Prime Minister, Mr Whitlam said today that a
cheque for $ 8,954,000 had been paid to the Queensland
Treasury following the Governor-General's assent to the
Local Government Grants Bill.
The sum of $ 8,954,000 represents the total
amfount allocated to Queensland in Federal grants for
local government during 1974/ 75. The Local Government
Grants Bill was passed by the House of Representatives
on 14 November and by the:-Senate on its last sitting
day last week, 21 November.
Mr Whitlam said the cheque had been paid to the
Queensland Treasury today. He explained that as a
special measure for 1974/ 75, the Australian Government
was providing the assistance in one lump sum payment.
Mr Whitlam said he welcomed the Queensland
Premier's assurance that the funds would be distributed
to the respective Local Government authorities as soon
as possible.
