Industries Assistance Commission Report Gloves,
Mittens or ' Mitts
The Primc Minister, Mr E. G. Whitlam, announced
today that the Government has accepted the recommendations of
the Industries Assistance Commission in its report on glovrs,
mittens or mitts. The report was released on 6 August 197'.
The Government's decision to implement the Commission's
recommendation will mean that a General rate of duty of 25% will
apply to gloves of the industrial type that are wholly or partly
coated or covered with artificial plastic material and to uncoated
knitted or crocheted gloves that are suitable for use in the
production of these industrial type gloves. Minimum rates of
duty will apply to all other goods under reference such as
dress gloves. Mr Whitlamn said that the assistance p) roposed by
the Commission and accepted by the Government was only an interim
measure pending the results of the iinquiry at present being
carried out by the Commission into the Clothing Industry.
Mr Whitlam also said that details of the customs
tariff changes arising from the Government's decision will be
announced when administrative arrangements to implement them
have been finalised.
