HIGH COURT DESIGN COMPETITION WINNER
The winning entry in the Australia-wide competition
held for the design of the High Court of Australia building,
planned for Canberra's National Area, was submitted by
the firm of Edwards, Madigan, Torzillo and Briggs, of
Sydney. Announcing this tonight, the Prime Minister,
Mr. Whitlam said the winning firm had designed the new
Australian National Gallery to be built in Canberra.
They had also won Sulman Awards for the Warringah Shire
Library in Sydney ( 1966) and, in association with the
New South Wales Government Architect, for a student residence
at Mitchell College of Advanced Education in Bathurst, N. S. W. ( 1970).
The competition for the High Court building was conducted
by thae National Capital Development Commission on behalf of the
Australian Government. The first stage, which attracted 158
entries from architects registered to practise in Australia,
prod-aced six finalists, who were asked by the assessing panel
to prepare designs for the second stage.
The six finalists were: Cameron, Chisholm and Nicol of Perth;
Rodney Connors, of Sydney; Guy Maron, of Cheesman, Doley, Neighbour
and Raffen, of Adelaide; McIntyre, McIntyre, of Melbourne;
Perrot, Lyon, Timlock and Kesa, of Melbourne; and Edwards, Madigan,
Torzillo and Briggs.
9he assessors were:
Sir Garfield Barwick, Chief Justice of the High Court.
Sir John Overall, former Chairman, National Capital
Planning Committee.
Professor P. H. Karmel, Chairman, Australian Universities
Commission.
Mr. E. H. Farmer, N. S. W. State Government Architect.
Mr. Daryl Jackson, Partner in the Melbourne firm of
Daryl Jackson and Evan Walker, Architects. / 2

In their report, the assessors commented that the winning
design " promises those qualities necessary to make a great building,
a structure of both national and international significance."
Models and a selection of drawings entered by the finalists
will be placed on display from Saturday at the Commission's
planning exhibition, Regatta Point:
