Visit to Australia by General Carlos P Romulo, Phillipines Foreign Secretary

PRESS\STATEMENT NO. 126

4 September 1973

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr E. G. Whitlam, announced today that the Philippines Secretary for Foreign Affairs, General Carlos P. Romulo, would visit Australia from 12 to 14 September as a guest of the Australian Government.

General Romulo has been prominent in public life for many years as an author, soldier, educator and diplomat. General Romulo visited Australia in 1942, acting as General MacArthur's aide-de-camp, and again in June 1972 for the 17th SEATO Ministerial Council Meeting. He has held many important positions including President of the United Nations General Assembly from 1949-50, President of the United Nations Security Council in 1957, Ambassador to the U. S. A. from 1952-53 and from 1955-62, and President of the University of the Philippines from 1962-68.

He has been twice Secretary for Foreign Affairs - from 1951-52 and since 1968 and was Secretary for Education from 1965-68. General Romulo has published many works and has been awarded a number of honorary degrees, decorations and awards, including the Pulitzer Prize in journalism.
