Statement by the Prime Minister, the ? t Hon. William McMahon,
C' _ P
My colleagues and I have learned-with a sense of deep sadness
of . the death of His Royal . Highness, the Duke of Windsor.
Many will recall thebrilliant success of his visit-to
Australia more than fifty years ago. le. captivated this country -withhis
youth and charm.
His decision to abdicate so shortly after succeeding his father,
King George V, was the result of-events which greatly moved all members
of the British Commonwealth..
Since that time he has, by the dignity of his bearing~ and his
personal qualities, retained and attracted wide-s-rread respect and
affection. On behalf of the Government, I have expressed to Her Majesty
The Queen, to his widow the Duchess of Windsor and to all members ofthe
Royal Family, our. sincere synmathy.
