The Australian Transport Advisory Council considered
a number of matters concerning railway transportation at their
meeting in Port Moresby.
Among these was an improved procedure for making
bookings for interstate railway journeys recommended by the
Victorian Minister, Mr Wilcox.
Railway Commissioners have been requested to discuss
these procedures with a view to the use of a computer system.
Refunds for incompleted journeys was another matter that
Commissionersare to look into.
They will also consider a proposal put forward by
the Western Australian Transport Minister, Mr O'Connor, for a
daylight service to operate through the Avon Valley in Western
Australia. At present the interstate trains pass through the
valley at night. The Council concluded its meeting today, the first
to be held in Papua and New Guinea.
Ministers expressed their appreciation of the
opportunity to get an insight into the problems and achievements
of this new emerging nation.
Ministers who attended the meeting chaired by the
Commonwealth Minister for Shipping and Transport, the Hon.
Ian Sinclair, were the Hon. M. A. Morris ( NSW), the Hon.
V. F. Wilcox ( VIC), the Hon. W. E. Knox ( QLD), the Hon. G. T. Virgo
the Hon. R. J. O'Connor ( WA) and the Hon. L. H. Bessell ( TAS).
