APPOINTNENT OF PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSIONER
Statement by the Prime Minister,
The Rt. Hon. J. G. Gorton. M. P.
The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Gorton, i
announced tonight that the Government had. appointed
Mr. A. B. McFarlane, as a Commissioner
of the Public Service Board. Mr. McFarlane, Secretary,
Department of Air, for the last twelve years, succeeds"-.:.
Mr. K. E. Grainger, who retired on 21st March on
reaching the age of 69.
Mr. Gorton said that Mr. McFarlane, a law
graduate of the University of Melbourne, joined the
Commonwealth Public Service in 1948 after serving
throughout the War period in the R. A. A. F. He had command
of No.' 2 Squadron in Darwin during 1942 and achieved the
rank of Group Captain in 1944. On his appointment to the
Commonwealth Public Service, Mr. McFarlane joined the I
Department of Civil Aviation and was promoted from the
position of Assistant Director-General ( Air Transport Policy)
to Secretary, Department of Air, in October, 196..
The Prime Minister said that Mr. McFarlane
was ideally suited for this appointment and that he
would bring to it the wide range of skills and knowledge
gained from his twenty years of experience in Cobmonwealth
Departments. Canberra.
