Statement by the Prime Minister, the Rt, 1Kon._ Sir RobetMeze
The Prime Minister announced in Canberra this
afternoon that the Commonwealth Government ! ould contribute
œ 100,000 to the Churchill Memorial Trust Fund,
Sir Robert said that he was sure all Australians
would take great pride in having the opportunity to be
associated with the establishment of the Memorial Trust
Fund. The object of the Fund that of providing a wide
range of scholarships in Commonwealth countries and in the
United States, available to people in all walks of life
is worthy in itself. It is of the greater significance
because it will mark in a permanent way the affection with
which all Australians regarded Sir Winston Churchill and
will stand as an ackn~ owledgment of the debt that Australians
felt they owed to this great wartime leader,
As President of the Appeal, Sir Robert commended
the tremendous work that had been done by those associated
with the organisation of the appeal.
BACKGROUND NOT1E Separate contributions of : C5,000 each have
been made to the Northern Territory section of the appeal,
to the appeal in Papua/ New Guinea and in the A. C. T. by,
respectively, the Northern Territory Administration, the
Papua/ New Guinea Administration, and the Minister for the
Interior. These contributions are in addition to the
Commonwealth Governmentts contribution of œ-100,000 announced
by the Prime Minister.
