Statement by the Deputy Prime Minister
the Right Honourable Jo McEwin. MP,

SENATE ELECTIONS
I make a statement to the House concerning
Senate elections. I make the statement at the request
of the Prime Minister who, as Honourable Members know,
is absent from the House for the cime being because of
illness. Honourable Members will be aware that to satisfy
the provisions of the Constitution, elections for the
Senate must h& ve been conducted and completed by
June next. so that newl-elected Senators may comience
their tierm ot service on 1st July, 1965.
On the recommendation of the Prime Minister on
behalf cf the Government, His Excellency the Governor-
Geneial has proposed to the State Governors an election
timetable. Each State has agreed to the timetable proposed
and, accordingly, I announce to the Hovse that elections
for the Senate wi2. l be held in all States on Saturday,
December, It is necessary that this announcement be made
to the House at this time since the law of some States
requires formal action in those States within the next few
days in order to give effect to the timetable in mind,
The full timetable is as follows
Issue of Writs o Monday, 26th October, 1964
Nominations close o Monday, 9th November, 1964
Polling Saturday, 5th December, 1964
Return of Writs On or before Saturday.
23rd January, 1965.
