RESIGNATION OF CHIEF JSTICE
Statement by the Prime Minister, the Rt., Hon. Sir Robert Menzies
The Prime Minister announced today that he had
conveyed to the Governor-General the resignation of Sir Owen
Dixon from the Chief Justiceship of the High Court of Australia.
" The resignation will be effective as from
midnight on April 13th, 1964 said the Prime Minister,
" The Full High Court will sil in Melbourne on the morning of
that day, so that Sir Owen may be farewelled in the presence
of his own Bar, of which he has been so distinguished a member
for so many years." I" Sir Owen Dixon has brought special honour to
the law, not only in Australia but throughout the Englishspeaking
world, He is one of the very greatest judicial lawyers
of the century? and has had, in various fields, an unsurpassed
record of public service. He will take into his retirement the
greatest of assets, the admiration, respect and affection of all
his contemporaries,"
