To Dr. Erhard: " PleaseQ accept my congratulations upon your
election to the important position of Chancellor of the
Federal Republic of Germany and my best wishes for a long
and successful term of office. I am, confident that you
will boar with groat distinction the heavy responsibility
of dealing with common world problems which confront us,
and I look forward to a further period of closo co-operation
between our two Governments."
To Dr. Adenauer: " As you terminate a long and distinguished
Chancellorship of the Federal Republic, may I offer on behalf
of myself and my Government, an expression of estoem and
sincere good wishes. History will record the role played
by Germany in the political and economic development of
post-war Europe, and tributes will be paid to your outstanding
leadership during these important years0" 1
