General Herbert 3. Powell is Commanding General, United
States Continental Army Command, Port Monroe, Virginia.
Prior to cofmanding the Third U. S. Army at Fort McPherson,
Georgia, from March 5, 1960, through September, General Powell was
Deputy Commanding General for Reserve Porces at USCONARC headquarters.
He held this post from April 1958 to March 1960 and distinguished
himself in promoting the One Army concept throughout Reserve
components of the command.
He previously was commandant of the United States Army
Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia; commanding general of the
Infantry Division ot Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; and for a time
Commanding General, United States Armr Pacific in Hawaii. During the
conflict in Korea, he commanded the famous 17th Infantry Regiment
when it was the only United States unit to reach the Yalu River on
the Manchurian border. In World Var II he was chief of staff of the
Infantry Division during three campaigns in Europe. He is a
graduate of the National War College, ashington, DC, and has served
on the Department of the Army General Staff.
General Powell was born in Monmouth, Oregon, on July 13,
1903. He descended from a colonial Virginia family. His grandfather
and grandmother followed the Oregon trail in a covered wagon and
founded his hometown in 1850.
He enlisted in the Oregon NTational Guard in 1919 and rose
to the grade of sergeant. He was corm-issioned a second lieutenant of
Infantry in the Regular Army by competitive examination upon graduation
from the University of Oregon in 1926.
He was married to Beryl Kinr; of Portland, Oregon, in 1928.
They have no children.
General Powell has been decorated with the Distinguished
Service Cross, the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf. Cluster, the Bronze
Star Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Medal, the Commendation
Ribbon with Metal Pendant, the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman
Badge as well as several decorations by allied governments.
He is a rated Army aviator.
