SUGAR PRICE INCREASE
Statement by the Acting Prime. Minister and Minister for Trade
agr rlidustry, Mr. John McEwen
The Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and
Industry, Mr. John McEwen, commented today on the announcement by
the Premier of Queensland, Mr. Nickltn, that the domestic price of sugar
would be increased as from 19th June.
Mr. McEwen said that the decision to increase the price
of sugar under the Commonwealth -Queensland Sugar Agreement had been
taken only after a very close examination of a fully-detailed case submitted

past seven years. The increase was considered appropriate in all the
circumstances. Mr. McEwen said the Sugar Agreement would be extended
for a further twelve months, pending a comprehensive re-negotiation of
the terms of the Agreement.
