STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER, THE HON P J KEATING MP
AUSTRALIAN REPUBLIC INFORMATION ABOUT THE GOVERNMENT'S
PROPOSAL The Government's proposal for the move to a Republic was outlined in a
speech delivered on June 7 this year -' An Australian Republic-the Way
Forward". In the speech, I put forward the arguments in support of the
Government's view that the Head of State of Australia should be an
Australian. To encourage a wider understanding of the issues surrounding the
Government's proposal, an information kit has been prepared for public
release. The information kit contains a copy of:
the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Australia;
the Prime Ministers speech of 7 June 1995 announcing the Government's
proposal;
* a pamphlet outlining the Government's proposal; and
* a Question and Answer booklet containing answers to commonly asked
questions about the move to a Republic.

In addition to the kit, the outline of the Government's proposal has been
translated into sixteen languages ( attached). These are available through
