VISIT OF HER ROYAL HIGHNESS PRINCESS
MARINA, DUCHESS OF KENT
Statement by the prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Menzies
The Prime Minister announced today that Her Royal
Highness. Princess Marina Duchess of Kent bad agreed to open
the new Defence Headquariers building at Aussell Hill at the
time of her visit to Canberra in September.
Sir Robert said that the ceremony would take
place on Monday, 28th September, following Princess. Marinavs
visit to the Australian War Memorial.
The Prime Minister added that Her Royal Highness
had also agreed to plant an oak tree on the shore of Take
Burley Griffin, This would take place after the Russell H1ill
ceremony and before Her Royal Highness returned to Government
House for luncheon.

BALCKGROUND The oak tree would be the first of two groves of
such trees to form part of the Commonwealth Gardens landscape
on the northern foreshcres of Lake Burley Griffi..
Some time ago the British Government through the
High Commissioner, Sir William Oliver, presented 1,000 acorns
gatbhezed from the Royal Park, Richmond, Surrey to Canberra,
These have been raised in the Yarralumla. Nursery and the groves
will be established in the next planting season,
