FOR MEDIA RESIGNATION OF THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL
AND APPOINTMENT OF HIS SUCCESSOR
The Prime Minister has announced this afternoon the Queen's acceptance of Mr Bill Hayden's
resignation as Governor-General with effect from 15 February 1996 and the appointment of Sir
William Deane as his successor.
The Governor-General Designate has released a statement.
Sir William and Lady ( lHelen) Deane are available for photographs this evening at 7.30 pm in
Sir William's office at the High Court, Canberra. This will be a picture opportunity ONLY
( two camera television pool, plus 4 still photographers, please). Entry will be via staff and
legal practitioners entrance which is located off Parkes Place ( on the south-eastern side of the
High Court).
Sir William will be available for a media conference at the High Court ( Judges' Common
Room, same entrance as above) on Tuesday 22 August at 11.30am.
