PATAWALONGA CLEAN-UP
The Federal Goviernmnent has toay commiftad $ 11I million to clean up
Adelde~ s Patrwalonga Esbiary an area identified as Austalia's worst
polluted wa~ rway.
The funding, under the Federal Govermeonts Better Cl~ zes Program. will
remnove pollution and improrve the water quality of the Patawalonga 3o it can
again be used for recreation and leis. zr acvities
This will be a joint project wth toe MFP, the South Australian Government and
local coundfl:
Patawalon Esuary, which has a cathmentt of over 200 square ilometrft
and flows through 11 coun= 1 areas. was kdentifted by the CaalZone inquiry
as Au* Wilrns wrt polutd watwevy.
Stormwater rn.-4W rubbish and pollutat from ftc hrn ara hawi had
an adverse s ori impact on Gleneig Beach which has lost development
and tourist oppornile
it has resulted In toe Patewalonga effe~ v* l becoming a cow poL
The cdean up oftoe Patrwalonga is part of a much larger project of urban water
man. awedent toe Pabawalaogs catftnent which could become a model for
toe res of Austraia.
The program will set out an overall plan for the proper colIacon, treatent and
ma1 emn of water.
The 26 CitiesAWrea Stagies around Auistralia demonstrate how urban
regner an occ. zr and how pruviously irisurmountable problems can be
overcome to give tims ara a new lemoan life.
