Statement by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Menzies
This afternoon, pursuant to the Government~ s
general invitation to industry to offer its views, a deputation
representing the Associated Chambers of Commerce of Australia the
Associated Chambers of Manufactures of Australia the Australian
Council of Retailers and the Federal Chamber of Automotive
Industries met a Committee of Commonwealth Government Ministers
and discussed with them a joint sutmission on behalf of those
organisations in relation to trade practices and monopolies, and
the protection of small traders.
The discussions were presided over by the Prime
Minister, who was accompanied by the Attorney-General the
Attorney-General Designate, the Minister for Trade and Industry,
the Treasurer the Minister for National Development and the
Minister for Labour and National Servicea
At the conclusion of the discussions, the Prime
Minister thanked the deputation for apprising the Government of
the views of the organisations represented at the discussions,
and said that, in framing legislation, the Government would take
these views into account, together with other views that had been
put to it. The Prime Minister added that when the legislation is
introduced there will be a further opportunity for public comment
before the debate in the Parliament proceeds.
