STATEMENT BY THE PRIMET MINISTER, THE HON P J KEATING, MP
APPOINTMIENT OF MICHAEL LAVARCH AS ATTORNEY-GENERAL
The Govern or-General has today appointed Mr Michael Lavarch to be Attorney-
General, followin8 Mr La-varch's election as Mlember for Dickson. The poll for thce
seat of Dickson was held on 17 April, later than the election in other seats because of
the death of a candidate during the campaign period and the need to issue a new writ.
When mny second Ministry was appointed on 24 March, I announced that Mr Lavarch
was to become Attorney -General upon beinS elected. In the mecantimie, Mr Duncan
Kerr has served as Attorney-Gcneral The Governor-General revoked Mr Kerr's
appointment as Attorney-General today at the same timie he appointed Mr Larvarch.
Mr Kerr remains Minister for Justice, a position which he has held since 24 March. Mr
Lavarch will be a micmlbcr of Cabinet and will have overall responsibility for the
Attorney-General's portrolio.
I ami very pleased to welcome Mr L~ avarch to thle Ministry, where het will be one of
four new Cabinet members who have not previolUsty held ministerial posts. I am
confident that Mr Lavarch will make a major contribution to the work of the
