Appointment of Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security

The Government has decided to re-appoint Mr Roger Holdrich as Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security for a second term of three years.

The Inspector-Gencral of Intelligcnce and Security plays a pivotal role in ensuring the accountability of Australia's security and intelligence agencies. The Office of the Inspector-Gcneral of Intelligence and Security was established in 1986
following one of the key recommendations of the second Hope Royal Commission on Australia's Intelligence and Security Agencies.

The Inspector-Gcneral assists Ministers oversee the activities of Australia's intelligence and security agencies the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, the Australian Secret Intelligence Service, the Office of National Assessments, the Dcfence Signals Directorate and the Dcfence Intelligence Organisation to ensure that these agencies act legally and with propriety, comply with Ministerial guidelines and directives and respect human rights.

Mr Holdrich's re-appointment has been supported by the Leader of the Opposition.
