PRIME MINISTER
FOR MEDIA 15 February 1988
At a meeting of the Federal ALP Caucus this afternoon,
Senator Nick Bolkus was elected to join the third Hawke
Ministry. This election follows the resignation on
9 February 1988 of the Hon. Mick Young, MP, from the
office of Minister for Immigration, Local Government and
Ethnic Affairs.
I have recommended to the Administrator,
Sir James Rowland, the following Ministerial
appointments. The Hon. A. C. Holding, MP, to hold-* the office of the
Minister for Immigration, Local Government and Ethnic
Affairs. As a portfolio Minister, Mr Holding will be a
member of Cabinet. He will also be Minister Assisting
the Prime Minister for Multicultural Affairs.
The Hon. Peter Morris, MP, will move to Senator Evans'
portfolio as Minister for Transport and Communications
Support, in which capacity he will assist the Minister
generally ( including representing the portfolio in the
House of Representatives) and have specific
responsibilities for particular areas of the portfolio
including road and rail transport.
Mr Morris will continue as Minister Assisting the
Prime Minister, with particular responsibility for the
Bicentenary, and will assist me generally in my
portfolio. Mr Morris will also assist the Treasurer in
a range of matters referred to him.
The Hon. Peter Staples will move to Dr Blewett's
portfolio of Community Services and Health as Minister
for Housing and Aged Care.
Senator Bolkus will hold the office of Minister for
Consumer Affairs and will be Minister Assisting the
Treasurer for Prices.
I have also recommended to the Administrator the
appointment of the Hon. Kim Beazley, MP, as
Vice-President of the Executive Council in place of
Mr Young. 004410

The appointments where they are to be made by the
Administrator are scheduled to be made this afternoon
at Government House, Canberra.
His Excellency the Administrator has agreed to my
releasing this information in advance.
Mr Beazley has also been appointed Leader of the House.
In this role Mr Beazley will be responsible for the
management of Government business in the House of
Representatives which was previously undertaken by
Mr Young.
