Mr Freddy Argy, OBE, has been appointed Director of the
Office of the Economic Planning Advisory Council..
Mr Argy haG had a varied and'distinguished career as an
economic adviser and manager in a range of positions.
After an ea~ rly career in the private sector, Mr Argy worked
in the Department of Trade and the Treasury until 1968 when
he spent five years in the then Department of Labour and
National Service.
He then became Chief Economist of the AIDC where he worked
in 1974/ 75, and followed that with a period as First
Assistant Secretary in the Department of Housing ( 1975/ 77)
and then aG First Assistant Secretary in the Financial
Institutions Division, Department of the Treasury ( 1977/ 79).
From 1979 to 1981, he was Secretary, Committee of Inquiry
into the Australian Financial System ( the Campbell inquiry).
( He was also a member of that Committee).
From 1981 to 1983, Mr Argy returned to the Treasury where he
was responsible for the Resources Allocation Division
dealing with taxation and industry policy, and longer term
economic policy issues.
From 1983 to 1985, Mr Argy was Australian Ambassador and
Permanent Representative to the OECD in Paris.
Since then, he has been a Deputy Secretary in the Department
of Employment and Industrial Relations.
Mr Argy will take up his new position on Monday, 16 June
1986.
